– Mr Betteridge, Hethersett Academy

Sparx Maths is the maths homework platform we use at Hethersett Academy. Your teacher will explain our school routines for Sparx and you will also be guided through using it when you first log in.
Follow these instructions:
  • Go to sparxmaths.uk
  • If asked, select "Student Login" and enter "Hethersett Academy" as your school
  • Click "Log in to Sparx using Microsoft"
  • Enter your school account email and password (the same details you use for school emails, teams, and computers), or just select the account if you are already logged in
  • That's it!

If you have any issues logging in, here are 4 things to try:

  • Use a different browser or device
  • Follow this guide to use a custom Sparx Login instead of using Microsoft
  • Speak to Mrs Fuller (our ICT Technician) in the office by D6
  • Speak to your maths teacher
Remember: minor technical issues are never an excuse for incomplete homework. You have the power to overcome them. This is one of many reasons it is essential to attempt all questions as soon as possible – ideally on the day it is set.

Sparx is designed to enable every pupil to achieve 100% and that is our expectation. Sparx learns your ability and tailors the difficulty specifically to you. Do not worry if you get a question wrong initially, there is a support video provided for each question and you may retry questions multiple times.

If you have tried a question a few times, you must contact your teacher for further guidance. You must prioritise attempting all questions rather than spending too long on a single question.

Contact with teachers should be made at least 2 days before the deadline so that there is time for you to get the feedback you need and act on it to achieve 100%. This is one of many reasons it is essential to attempt all questions as soon as possible – ideally on the day it is set.

Bookwork is an essential part of learning. Watch the video guide on bookwork from the Sparx team.

We provide every pupil with a yellow Sparx Maths homework book and expect their presentation to follow the same high standards as in their orange classwork books. Refer to the examples linked below:

Sparx checks your bookwork as you complete questions and your teacher will also look at your yellow book in class.

Sparx Maths is our favorite platform for maths homework and we are incredibly grateful that Inspiration Trust have made an investment so that you can access Sparx for free. To get the most out of this incredible offer, you should:
  • Complete your weekly Compulsory questions as soon as possible
  • Extend your learning with your weekly XP Boost
  • Challenge yourself with your weekly Target questions
  • Use Independent Learning for targeted revision

Throughout the year, teachers might also provide rewards (e.g. house points) for excellent effort on Sparx, such as being the first to complete homework, excellent bookwork presentation, regular completion of XP Boost and Target, good use of Independent Learning, or through competitions. We hope that these rewards will encourage you towards independently unlocking your own potential as you work your way up the Levels of Motivation.

AI tools can be really helpful when you're doing your Sparx Maths homework — but only if you use them the right way. It's fine to ask AI for guidance, like you would with a tutor, family member, or friend, especially if you're stuck after watching the Sparx video. For example, you could say, "I'm struggling with a question about adding fractions, can help me understand the process?"

However, just asking AI for the answers is not helpful and could cause problems: Sparx automatically makes your homework harder if you finish quickly, and teachers check your written working and progress carefully. If your work suddenly seems much harder or your understanding doesn't match your scores, it could be obvious you haven't been doing the learning properly. Homework is there to help you get better, so using AI responsibly will help you in the long run!

Alongside Compulsory questions, each week pupils also receive a set of tailored XP Boost questions and a set of tailored Target questions.

XP Boost questions provide more practice at the same difficulty level to further embed the core knowledge.

Target questions provide a challenge at the right level to stretch pupils' thinking.

Independent Learning allows pupils to search for questions on any topic of their choosing. This is especially useful as revision leading up to and following assessments

Sparx Maths conducted the first ever double-blind randomised controlled trial for an education technology product. An independent analysis of the relationship between Sparx Maths and maths outcomes by Cambridge University and RAND Europe found that:

"Time spent using Sparx Maths is positively and significantly associated with higher outcomes in maths"

A useful resource is the Parent's Guide to Sparx Maths, created by Sparx themselves.
